School season has now reopen. And everything seemed to be going back on track again. As for most of the freaky cheerleaders, all they want to do is to start practices ASAP. Well here is a few pointers from me of what should be carried out before you go on field.
School Admin
The most vital aspect of building a cheerleading program at your school. Is better to meet your principal or teacher advisor and discuss on your cheerleading plans for this new year. This would include having tryouts to select a new team. If you have a coach, it would be much better as your coach would be your best mate. A coach is essential, and to me, I consider him or her part of the team.
Announcement
You might need a few help from your cheerleading team mates on this. Posters, assembly announcements and etc should be put up on notice. Nobody likes to do things last minute, meaning it is inappropriate if you announced the tryouts only a few days earlier. At least give everyone a 2 weeks notice. In your announcement you should specify what are you looking for and perhaps get them prepared by providing cheers to learn etc.
Tryouts
Who will select the team is up to you. But to have a fair judging and a little professional help, you could always invite foreign coaches or individuals who has experienced in cheerleading. You could invite the good people from CHARM and MOCHA to provide the necessary assistance in selecting your new members.
Note: Tryouts is better to be held in 2 days basis instead of a one try only. On the first day, you could use introductions of basic cheerleading skills which would include motions, jumps and basic stunt. Teach a cheer and dance too. Then, have your tryouts maybe 2-3 days after that so those who audition can at least practice what they have learned. This way, you wouldn't be frustrated! Trust me.
Planning
Write down your plans and goals for this year. Discuss them with your coach or advisor, and your team members. Look out for competition dates, clinics or camps. You could enquire with CHARM or MOCHA for any cheerleading related activities. Once you have compiled them, make sure all your members have a copy. It is also advised that your team should have a cheerleading constitution. This would enhance your program. Consult your coach or advisor for further assistance.
Having a cheerleading program that is organised and efficient will definetly provide further excitement within your team! Have fun cheering and see you all soon!
